It's a big lake with over 600 miles of shoreline and a length of 41 miles. When completed in 1930, Lake Murray was the largest man-made lake in the world for power production purposes and the largest earthen dam. The lake is a very popular residential living area with waterfront homes and homes near the lake for easy lake access (Lexington, Irmo, Chapin, Prosperity). The lake is popular for boating, sailing, watersports and fishing. Lake Murray hosts numerous fishing tournaments (both local and large national). The Dreher Shoals Dam on Lake Murray (between Irmo and Lexington) is one of Columbia's most popular places to walk - each way is a distance of 1.6 miles for a roundtrip of just over 3 miles.
